Claude for small business: which plan fits a team of five

If two or more people in your business will use Claude for work, the plan to look at is Team: $20 a seat a month billed yearly, $25 billed monthly, for 2 to 150 seats. This guide works out what that comes to for five people, explains the usage limits and the Premium seat, and says when Team is the wrong plan. Every price is Anthropic's own, read on 18 October 2026.

The short answer

Anthropic's own small-business page gives it in one line: "Pro for one person, Team for a business with more than one; both are month to month." After reading the pricing and support pages, that is what we would say too. For two or more people it is Team, which has two kinds of seat. Standard is for most people. Premium has "5x more usage than standard seats" and costs five times as much, so it suits the one or two people who work in Claude most of the day. You can mix the two in one team.

  • $20a Standard seat a month, billed yearly ($25 monthly)
  • $100a Premium seat a month, billed yearly ($125 monthly)
  • 2 to 150seats on a Team plan
  • $17a month for one person on Pro, billed yearly ($20 monthly)

What a team of five pays

We are a web studio of five, so we did the sums for five people. The prices are Anthropic's and the arithmetic is ours.

SetupA monthA year
5 Standard seats, billed yearly$100$1,200
5 Standard seats, billed monthly$125$1,500
4 Standard and 1 Premium, billed yearly$180$2,160
4 Standard and 1 Premium, billed monthly$225$2,700
5 separate Pro plans, billed yearlyabout $83$1,000
5 separate Pro plans, billed monthly$100$1,200

Two things stand out. Team billed yearly costs the same each month as five Pro plans billed monthly, $100. And against Pro billed yearly, Team costs $40 more per person per year, or $200 for five. That is the price of the admin side described next.

Usage beyond what a seat includes is extra. It comes later in this guide.

What Team adds over separate Pro plans

Anthropic's pricing page lists these for Team: central billing and administration, single sign-on, admin controls for remote and local connectors, and "No model training on your content by default". Its support page adds spend caps at the organization and the individual level, and role-based permissions. In practice one person owns the bill, adds and removes people in one place and decides how much extra usage the team may buy.

What Team does not add: the comparison table on the pricing page marks audit logs, SCIM provisioning and custom data retention controls as Enterprise only. For five people that rarely matters, but if a client contract asks for audit logs, it decides the plan.

Pro for each person is probably enough for now, and you can move to Team later.

Standard or Premium

Both seat types include Claude Code and Cowork. Anthropic's support page puts the per-session allowance of a Standard seat at 1.25 times Pro's and a Premium seat's at 6.25 times, with a weekly limit on top of each across all models. Limits are per person: one person reaching theirs does not stop the others, and a limit cannot be shared or passed to a colleague.

We cannot tell you how many hours a seat lasts. Anthropic gives multiples of Pro's allowance, not hours or messages, and what a task costs depends on the model and the work. So treat the first month as a measurement: note who runs out, when, and doing what. Anthropic's page describes mixing seat types so that Premium seats go to the power users while the others stay on Standard. Whoever runs long sessions in Claude Code is the likeliest first candidate.

Newer models are the other thing to check. Anthropic's support article of 2 September 2026 says that on Standard seats Fable 5 and Fable 5.1 "aren't included in your plan's usage limits" and need usage credits, while on Premium seats "you can use up to 50% of your weekly usage limits on Fable models at no extra cost". Model lists move often, so read it before you choose.

When someone hits their limit

Every plan has usage limits that reset on a rolling five-hour window, and paid plans add weekly limits on top. A person who runs out can wait, or keep going on usage credits if the owner has switched them on.

Usage credits are the owner's to control. According to Anthropic's support article of 4 September 2026, an Owner or Primary Owner sets one monthly spend limit for the whole organization and can set one for each person. Credits are billed at standard API rates. When a limit is reached, that person cannot use Claude, Cowork or Claude Code until the next billing period or until the limit is raised.

Owners can also buy discounted bundles: $50 for $45, $250 for $200 or $1,000 for $700, up to $3,000 a month in discounted bundles on a Team plan. Anything past that cap is billed at the standard credit rate.

We would start with a low organization limit and raise it once a month has shown where the usage goes.

Claude for Small Business is a plugin, not a plan

Anthropic launched Claude for Small Business on 15 September 2026. It is not a separate plan: the workflows are, in its words, "available on every paid Claude plan", they run in Claude Cowork, and the launch post recommends Team "for businesses with more than one person".

The page describes a Small Business plugin with workflows called Monday brief (set for 6:30 AM every Monday), Close books, Proposals, Leads, Marketing and Build agents, plus connectors to QuickBooks, HubSpot, Shopify, Stripe, Gusto and Canva "and 25 more". Its promise is "Nothing sends until you say so." For an agency, Proposals and Leads look like the relevant ones. We have not run these workflows, so we are not reviewing them.

Anthropic also lists free workshops: in person in Memphis, Savannah, Bentonville, Tampa and Raleigh between 20 October and 12 November 2026, and online sessions through 17 November.

When Team is the wrong plan

  • One person. Pro is $17 a month on the yearly plan ($200 billed up front) or $20 billed monthly. If Pro's limits do not last your day, Max starts at $100 a month for 5x or 20x Pro's usage per five-hour session.
  • Twenty or more people. Enterprise is listed at "US$20/seat/month, billed annually, 20 seat minimum", but the seat fee covers access only and usage is billed separately at API rates, so the seat price is not the total. It also adds the audit logs, SCIM and custom retention that Team lacks.
  • Looking for a discount. We found none an agency qualifies for. Anthropic's Team rate for nonprofits is $8 a user a month, open to registered nonprofits, schools and certain healthcare providers.

How this connects to what we build

We make Proofyard, a production board for web and design agencies that Claude works through a connector, so you should weigh what follows with that in mind. Work Claude does for you through the connector runs on your own Claude plan, which means your seat pays for it. Proofyard's own AI features, such as the suggestions on a task, run on credits that come with a Proofyard seat. If the first part is what you care about, our guide to using Claude for project management and the Claude project management page show how the pieces fit.

The Claude queue page of a production board: Cowork checked the queue 6 minutes ago, a box to tell Claude what to make, and a request where Claude asks whether a launch email goes to all customers or only trial accounts
Work people hand to Claude, picked up from their own Claude (claude.ai, Claude Code or Cowork) through the connector. Sample data.

Teams that share Claude between several people also need a place for what it should remember. We wrote up how we run a shared knowledge base, and AI for web design agencies covers where an agency's week goes before any seat is bought.

What we would do with five people

This is advice from reading the pages, not a record of what we spend.

  1. Put everyone on Standard seats, billed monthly for the first month so you can change your mind.
  2. Switch usage credits on with a low organization limit, and a per-person limit if you want one.
  3. For a month, write down who hits a limit, when and during what work.
  4. Move the person who hit it most often to a Premium seat, and compare the result with simply buying usage credits for them.
  5. Once the pattern is clear, switch to yearly billing, which saves $300 a year on five Standard seats.
